Personnel


Crews for the Air Wing are selected from within the sworn ranks of the Massachusetts State Police. Presently, the unit consists of approximately 21 Pilots and Tactical Flight Officers. Each Aircraft has a minimum crew of two, One Aircraft Commander (Pilot) and at least one Tactical Flight Officer (TFO). Each crew member is assigned specific duties; however all crew can pilot the aircraft in the event of an emergency. An additional TFO may be added for particularly difficult missions


Each crew member is equipped with flight gear, helmet and personal survival vest with flotation collar, integrated load bearing harness, emergency breathing device, and (NVG) Night Vision Goggles.


Flying greater than 2000 flight hours annually requires the expertise of four dedicated civilian technicians that comprise the unit's maintenance staff. These outstanding support team members are the unsung heroes of the unit that keep the fleet of aircraft mission ready and capable to respond whenever the need arises.
